Alexander Niscoveanu

CWG 2026 Longlist Gymnast

I’ve been in the gym for as long as I can remember. Born and raised in Cardiff, I was introduced to gymnastics almost from birth, regularly going to the club with my mum and dad, who were both coaches. From there, the progression into participation felt completely natural. I began with baby gym classes and, around the age of four, joined the boys’ squad at the gym which my dad coached.

Growing up, I tried a wide range of sports, including, swimming, football, and tennis. However, gymnastics was the one I always came back to. I didn’t start competing until I was around seven or eight, but by the age of nine I had earned places on both the Welsh squad and the British squad through grade competitions.

When I was 12, I outgrew my home gym in Cardiff, Wales, as it could no longer provide the training hours and facilities I needed. As a result, my dad and I moved to Essex so I could train at the renowned South Essex Gymnastics Club, where Anthony Wise became my coach.

Over the years, my favourite apparatus has changed, and I’d describe myself as a strong all-rounder. At the moment, my main focus is high bar, where I’m working towards major release-and-catch skills such as the Cassina, Coleman, and Pagan. I wouldn’t say I have a single favourite skill, but these are what I’m currently striving to master.

A standout highlight of my career so far was winning team gold at the European Youth Olympic Festival and placing third all-around in 2022. It was an incredible and unforgettable experience.

An interesting fact about me is that back when I was about 10 I did a show and played the character Jon in Peter Pan working with the legendary David Hasselhoff, an experience I will never forget! Outside of gymnastics, I enjoy playing golf and spending time with friends. I’ve always dreamed of representing Wales at the Commonwealth Games, and I’m extremely grateful to be on the longlist. I hope to make the team and have the opportunity to make my country proud.
