Sports Leaders
- An entry-level programme ideal for young people and those new to leadership in sport.
- This course focuses on developing confidence, communication, and basic leadership skills to support activity delivery in a fun and engaging environment.
- Leaders must be 13 years of age on the day of the course.

Assistant Foundation Coach (formerly Level 1) – Available early April 2026
The first step into the new British Gymnastics coaching pathway. This course prepares learners to assist in the delivery of gymnastics sessions under supervision, building core coaching skills and experience within a club setting. The course is made up of two parts:
Part 1. Foundations of Gymnastics Coaching
*IMPORTANT* – You will require a British Gymnastics log-in to access this course. Please find a ‘how to sign up guide’ here. Please note – you will be asked to enter you Welsh Gymnastics membership ID so please have this to hand.
- Enrolment is open to those aged 16 and over.
- Foundations of Gymnastics Coaching is a self-paced online course, taking approximately 8–14 hours to complete depending on individual learning styles and pace.

Part 2. Delivering Gymnastics Activities
- Once learners have completed the Foundations of Gymnastics Coaching, they can enrol on Delivering Gymnastics Activities—a blended course combining online learning with three full practical days.
- Learners benefit from real coaching environments through partnerships with host venues, including access to gymnasts on Days 2 and 3.
- Assessment is completed throughout the practical days by tutors. At the end of Day 3, learners receive their outcome. Those who meet the required standards will achieve the Assistant Foundation Coach qualification.

Foundation Coach (formerly Level 2) – Available late April 2026
The next stage in the pathway, enabling learners to plan and deliver structured gymnastics sessions independently. This course develops coaching knowledge, practical delivery skills, and the ability to support participant progression. This course is made up of two parts:
Part 1. Leading Gymnastics Sessions
- Learners must hold the Assistant Foundation Coach qualification (formerly Level 1) and be aged 18 or over.
- This is an instant-access, online, self-paced course that takes approximately 8 hours to complete. It builds on the knowledge developed during the Assistant Foundation Coach stage, focusing on the responsibilities of a Lead Coach.
- The content is aligned with the CIMSPA Professional Standard for Coach.

Part 2. Independent Delivery Assessment – Available May 2026
To enrol on the Independent Delivery Assessment, learners must have completed Leading Gymnastics Sessions.
This stage represents a significant development in the coaching framework, moving away from traditional end-point assessments towards a more authentic, in-club evaluation process.
Learners will:
- Complete a series of practical coaching tasks within their club environment
- Be assessed by a qualified in-club assessor (e.g. a mentor or experienced coach)
- Submit evidence for external quality assurance
Once the required standards are met and quality checks are approved, learners will achieve the Foundation Coach qualification.
This approach recognises the value of real coaching practice and ensures assessments reflect genuine coaching environments.
