Welsh Gymnastics will proudly join the other Home Nations in signing the Brighton Plus Helsinki Declaration at the 2026 British Gymnastics Championships on the 21st March, reaffirming its commitment to advancing gender equality across the sport.

The Brighton Plus Helsinki Declaration is the leading global framework for promoting gender equality in sport and physical activity. First introduced in 1994 and reinforced in 2014, it now has the backing of more than 600 organisations worldwide and continues to guide meaningful progress for women and girls in sport.

At its core are ten key principles covering leadership, resources, education, research, opportunity and representation. Together, these principles aim to ensure sport is more inclusive, accessible and equitable for women and girls at every level.

By becoming a signatory, Welsh Gymnastics is committing to championing these principles within its work and joining a global community dedicated to turning words into action. This commitment goes beyond a symbolic gesture, it helps shape strategy, influence decision-making and strengthen structures that support women and girls throughout the sport.

For many organisations around the world, signing the declaration has led to lasting change. From shifting priorities and reallocating resources, to creating greater opportunities and visibility for women and girls, the declaration acts as a catalyst for progress across the sporting landscape.

As a sport made up predominantly of girls and women, this commitment is particularly meaningful for the gymnastics community in Wales. Signing the Brighton Plus Helsinki Declaration reflects Welsh Gymnastics’ ongoing dedication to ensuring that women and girls feel valued, supported and empowered, whether they are taking their first steps in the gym, coaching the next generation, or leading the sport at the highest level.

The signing at the British Championships will mark an important moment for the sport across the UK, with the Home Nations coming together to publicly demonstrate their shared commitment to gender equality and a more inclusive future for gymnastics.

Through this pledge, Welsh Gymnastics looks forward to continuing to build an environment where women and girls can thrive, lead and succeed, helping to shape a stronger, more inclusive future for the sport.
