After an inspiring career that spanned over a decade, Welsh gymnast Josh Cook has officially announced his retirement from competitive gymnastics. Josh leaves behind a legacy defined by passion, resilience, and excellence, both in the gym and beyond.

Josh’s journey began at YMCA Barry, where he trained under the guidance of Peter Haysham. From an early age, his talent was undeniable, and he quickly rose through the ranks of Welsh gymnastics. His junior and senior careers were marked by consistent success at both national and international levels.
Among his standout achievements, Josh claimed gold on Horizontal Bar at the UK School Games, multiple Welsh All-Around titles at both junior and senior levels, and apparatus golds on vault, parallel bars, and high bar, with additional podium finishes across other events. At the British Championships, Josh stood out as a junior medallist on floor, rings, and vault, later becoming a British Masters medallist on both floor and high bar.

Josh represented Wales at two Commonwealth Games (2018 and 2022), earning the distinction of being the youngest gymnast at the 2018 Games. His performances were a testament to his dedication, culminating in an All-Around final appearance at both editions.
On the European stage, Josh excelled at the Northern European Championships, where he became rings champion and earned team, parallel bars, and high bar medals, finishing just shy of the podium in the All-Around in 4th place.
In a bold step, Josh transitioned to the NCAA system, joining the University of Illinois to pursue a degree in Chemical Engineering while continuing to compete at the collegiate level. Under the guidance of Daniel Ribeiro, he contributed to an NCAA Championship team bronze and was honoured as a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Athlete, a recognition of his ability to balance elite sport with academic excellence.
Reflecting on his journey, Josh shared:
“It’s been an amazing journey, and one that has opened so many doors and opportunities. From early in my career I was fortunate to be surrounded by incredibly supportive coaches, team mates and staff which helped shape my journey with Welsh Gymnastics and beyond. I am grateful to be able to look back on so many amazing memories and lessons that this sport has provided. Thank you!”
As Josh moves into the next chapter of his life, his impact on the gymnastics community in Wales and beyond will remain. His story stands as an example of what can be achieved with talent, humility, and unwavering commitment.

Everyone at Welsh Gymnastics and in the wider community wishes Josh the best in all his future endeavours.
