Michael Tang

CWG 2026 Longlist Gymnast

I’ve been doing gymnastics for 13 years and started in a leisure centre when I was 6 but the class I was attending stopped after a year. 2 years later I started training at Cardiff Central Youth Club in their boys novice squad at age 9. I was at CCYC for 5 years before moving to Somersault, where I trained for 3 years before moving to YMCA Barry. Whilst at YMCA Barry I competed at my first British Championships in the U18 category placing 12th overall.

Less than a year later in the build up to Welsh Championships, I completely ruptured my Achilles which was a devastating injury and meant I had to have surgery. I had to take a year out from training and competing as I started the long road to recovery. After over a year I was selected to represent Wales at the Northern European Championships in Dublin in 2024.

My favourite apparatus is Parallel Bars, because the skills just all feel so different from each other. One of my favourite skills is probably Stutz on P-bars.

My favourite subject in University is probably sporting pedagogy.

I currently work part time as a coach at YMCA Barry coaching both boys squad and recreational classes.

It’s amazing to have my dedication and years of hard work recognised by being on the Commonwealth Games longlist. It is great to be one step closer to the goal of representing my country at the Games.
