History
The Welsh Amateur Gymnastics Association was founded in 1902 and celebrated their centenary in 2002. By 2004 Welsh Gymnastics dropped their amateur status and became a company Limited by Guarantee. The modernisation process was complete with the appointment of a Chief Executive Officer. Welsh Gymnastics Ltd is now steered by a board of competency-based directors headed by Helen Phillips.
For many years W.A.G.A. catered for Men's & Women’s Artistic Gymnastics. By the mid 1980's three further disciplines had emerged; Rhythmic, Sports Acrobatics and General Gymnastics. Today General Gymnastics has broadened to include specific programmes for pre-school age children as well as children and adults with special needs. Since the late 1990's Trampolining, Tumbling, Welsh Schools, and Aerobics have come on board to complete the nine disciplines that come under the Welsh Gymnastics banner.
Over the years Welsh Gymnastics has produced Olympians, World and GB champions.
A Technical Committee exists for each of the disciplines and subsequently Chair's for the Joint Technical Committee come together bi-monthly to discuss issues of a technical nature pertaining to all nine disciplines. The Chair of the JTC sits on the WG Board as the Technical Director.
The principality is divided into four regional areas namely North, South East, South Central and West. The four regional areas have their own committee structures. Whilst following the policies of WG they are also responsible for their own area competitions and squad training sessions. The four Area Chairs also hold bi-monthly meetings attended by Clubs in the Area to discuss membership issues. These meetings are chaired by the Membership Director, a further member of the WG Board.
The Welsh Gymnastics offices are currently based in the Sport Wales National Centre, Cardiff and currently have four full time office-based staff, four Regional Development officers, a Workforce Development Co-ordinator a Performance Manager, a Choreographer and National Coaches.
