Three Welsh gymnasts helped steer Great Britain’s junior men to a brilliant fourth spot at the 2022 TeamGym European Championships in Luxembourg.

Toby Stewart, Noah Higgs and Sam Kirby from Evolve Gymnastics Academy were part of a 10-strong men’s junior team who finished just outside the medals places among what was a strong field.

The team scored 15.900 on floor, 16.150 on tumble and 15.650 on trampette for a combined total of 47.700. Britain had also qualified for the final in fourth place.

Denmark won gold ahead of Sweden and Norway who took silver and bronze respectively.

Toby, Noah and Sam are already making history this week competing at these championships. In doing so, they become the first gymnasts, male or female, from Wales to compete for GB in TeamGym.

The trio all train with the Evolve club in Cwmfelinfach.

Toby attends Caerleon Comprehensive School while Noah goes to Cardinal Newman in Rhydyfelin and Sam attends Coleg y Cymoedd.

A total of 70 British gymnasts are competing in Luxembourg this week with representation across the senior women’s, senior men’s, senior mixed, junior women’s, junior men’s and junior mixed categories. Read more from British Gymnastics here.

Still a relatively new discipline, TeamGym is a competition for clubs and consists of three sections: women’s, men’s and mixed teams.

Each team comprises of a minimum of six and a maximum of 12 gymnasts, where gymnasts can show their skills in three different disciplines: floor, trampette and tumbling. All three require effective teamwork, excellent technique and spectacular acrobatic elements.
